Annual Youth Employer Appreciation Breakfast

The GLWIB Quarterly Meeting and Youth Employer Appreciation Breakfast, originally scheduled for March 19th has been rescheduled for April 9th, at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center from 7:30-9:00 am.
Each year the GLWIB hosts the Breakfast to celebrate local employers who assist the WIB and Career Center of Lowell with hiring youth and providing them with invaluable work experience. In 2012, 200 young adults who participated in the GLWIB Connecting Activity program were hired by local employers. On behalf of the Board, we would like to thank the participating employers for making a difference in the Greater Lowell community and in the lives of young people.

Young Adult Summer Employment Program
|
Applications for the Young Adult Summer Employment Program will be available starting April 16, 2013 at the Career Center of Lowell. The Young Adult Summer Employment Program provides summer employment opportunities to young adults between the ages of 14-21 who reside in Lowell. In order to participate, youth must meet specific income and other eligibility criteria.
Young adults are provided summer employment opportunities and work readiness skills in a variety of entry level jobs with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and area schools, etc. The main goals of this program are to provide work readiness training, basic workplace skills, life skills and vocational exploration. The program will operate from July 8, 2013 through August 16, 2013. For more information, click here.

IN-SCHOOL and OUT-OF-SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAMS WIA FISCAL YEAR 2014 REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

The GLWIB is seeking applicants to provide comprehensive services for Workforce Investment Act (WIA) eligible youth between the ages of 16-21, who reside within the Greater Lowell Workforce Investment Area (City of Lowell and the following towns: Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro and Westford) for both In-School and Out-of-School Programs.

Career Center of Lowell and GLWIB employees came together this week for a great cause. In a true team effort, we were able to collect 469 pounds of groceries for the Merrimack Valley Food Bank.

During the 2nd Quarter of 2012, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD) conducted a survey with more than 14,000 employers to determine the number of job vacancies. The results indicated 74,000 job vacancies state wide.
The MA EOLWD has made the results of the survey available through a series of tables, which can be downloaded in Excel spreadsheets. The data has also been made available at the regional level. You can access the results here.

MA Reaches Pre-Recession Job Levels
|
On March 21, 2013, the MA Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development announced that Massachusetts has surpassed pre-recession job levels.
With revised numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing more jobs were created in January than initially estimated, there are now 3,318,500 jobs in Massachusetts, compared to 3,304,300 in April 2008. Click here to learn more.

On May 2, 2013, the GLWIB Connecting Activities in collaboration with Middlesex Community College and Lowell High School will host the annual Youth Job Fair in the Lowell High School Cafeteria. The 2013 Youth Job Fair PSA features Board Members Maureen Fitzpatrick of Lowell General Hospital and Peter Martin of Walgreens, as well as 2 students. Preview the PSA below to find out what employers expectations are for youth and how the Job Fair has helped young adults. Feel free to share this video!
Last year's Job Fair was a huge success, with 48 employers and more than 750 youth attending. Additionally, 158 students obtained part-time employment from the Job Fair. Workforce Training Fund Workshops
|
The Workforce Training Fund is a state fund enacted into law in July 1998 and financed entirely by Massachusetts employers. Its purpose is to provide resources to Massachusetts businesses and workers to train current and newly hired employees. Learn how your company can benefit from this program by attending an informational seminar or application workshop designed to guide you through the process.
Companies preparing to submit an application for a Workforce Training Fund grant may register to attend an Application Workshop sponsored by Middlesex Community College on Friday, April 12, 2013, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM at the Bedford Campus. Nine Career Center of Lowell customers recently completed CNC Machine Operator Training sponsored by the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) and the Massachusetts Department of Veterans' Services designed to help Veterans obtain skills for jobs as CNC Machinists. During the two-week, 80 hour class, participants learned about Milling, Turning, Blueprint Reading and Metrology.

STEM Pipeline Fund @Scale Workforce Development Grant

Along with the other Massachusetts Workforce Investment Boards, the GLWIB is a partner on the MA STEM Pipeline Fund @Scale Workforce Development Grant recently awarded by the US Department of Labor.
